Here's another application for a phone. IPhones starting from 3G have a built-in compass that reacts to a magnetic field. And metal, as you know, is magnetized. It is to this magnetization that the Metal Detect program reacts. It is not necessary to expect special accuracy in determining the amount of iron, but if the sensitivity is adjusted correctly, then it will be quite suitable as a portable metal detector.
