Rambler cards vs Yandex.Maps

Rambler cards vs Yandex.Maps

Recently, the Rambler holding has placed its new Rambler-Maps application in App Store, and the company's PR service has tired of releases. So, there is a new free navigator for iPhone and a direct competitor to Yandex.Maps. What electronic cards should be left on the first page of a smartphone? Let's try to compare these two services in the review.

The Sidikom company is responsible for the cartographic basis of Rabmel-Kart and presents them as the most detailed maps of Russia in the public domain. They cover 120 thousand settlements, 2000 of which – with details to the house. For hundreds of cities, the app provides accurate traffic information.

The latest version of Yandex.Maps offers only 263 cities in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and some of them have only 'folk maps' – a very modest geography. Here Rambler is in front.

But on the other hand, you can add maps made by yourself to the Yandex application.

'Rabmel-Maps' on my 3GS are loaded much faster than those of Yandex. Vector format consumes very little traffic. Yandex maps load more slowly, especially in satellite imagery mode. But on the other hand, you can not pay attention to traffic at all – subscribers of Megafon, Beeline and Kyivstar are not paid for downloading maps. In addition, for 41 cities Yandex makes it possible to download offline maps, while Rambler maps can be used only if the Internet is available.

Yandex.Maps can be viewed in the 'Satellite' mode – satellite images will become the background of the map. Rambler does not provide satellite images, instead, Rambler-Maps are made in three-dimensional: with two buttons you can change the angle of view, from a vertical (flat map) to smoothly move to 3D-representation. It looks impressive, but there is little practical use. Houses of the same type – it is better to look at boxes from space as done by Yandex and Google Map.

In my opinion, Rambler cards are more focused on car enthusiasts, a lot of functions and application settings are implemented for them. For example, Rambler-Maps allow you to build driving routes both in one city and on main intercity highways, with instructions on the recommended lane and warnings about cameras, speed bumps, taking into account road markings, signs.

When constructing a route, traffic jams and ongoing repairs are taken into account. All routes are laid out and updated based on the current traffic situation; the system also remembers and analyzes the traffic situation in the past days. The application also implements voice prompts, night and day map display modes.

Perhaps, this program pretends more to be an auto navigator, such as Progorod or City Guide, with one huge advantage – it's free.

But the interface logic of Rambler-Kart is a little lame. Getting out of the menu to the 'area' and back is not so easy. The design of the application looks untidy and rude. On a small screen iPhone, it is not always convenient to sort through the jumble of information amid a palisade of 3D buildings, routes and pop-up street names. Working with Yandex.Maps is much more comfortable: management is clearer, the appearance of cards is more pleasant and easier to perceive.

Both applications allow you to search for various objects by address and by POI – 'points of interest'. Rambler Maps has augmented reality function (image transmission from street cameras), Yandex offers three-dimensional panoramas of 99 cities.

Now the conclusions: these two programs are for different purposes. “Yandex.Maps” is much simpler both in terms of functionality and control, and serves as a duty application for walking on foot. “Rambler-cards” is a gift for motorists. Free navigator with great possibilities.

The Rambler-Maps application requires at least firmware 4.0, while Yandex.Maps will also be used on unofficial “oldies” who, for some reason, are stuck on firmware 3.0.
