In 2007, the first generation iPhone appeared on the mobile device market, which determined the further vector of smartphones development for 10 years ahead. Over time, competitors of the firm Apple using Android and other operating systems have learned to create phones that have more attractive designs, as well as good value for money. But the tenth generation smartphone Apple received an updated design that is not inferior to competitors. New Chips iPhone X include biometric user identification technology instead of a fingerprint scanner.
Face ID
You can set up Face ID as soon as you turn on your smartphone for the first time. This option is even easier and faster to set up than Touch ID. The camera window appears on the display, after which the user needs to turn his head several times, showing it from different sides. This is required for the TrueDepth camera to map the face. The system identifies the user with high accuracy, even if he is wearing glasses or a headdress. The owner of the smartphone is well recognized even in poor lighting conditions.
The identification system has a self-learning function. If the user's face receives any visual changes (for example, as a result of an injury), then Face ID will not recognize it, but after entering the PIN-code, the system will understand that it is necessary to remember the new appearance.
Compared to apps that use Touch ID, Face ID is slower, but the time difference is negligible. The user just needs to look at the display for the smartphone to be automatically unlocked and provide access to Apple Pay and other services. In this case, you do not need to press anything. The function recognizes a face only if the eyes are open. This system is so convenient that over time the user forgets about having a lock on the phone.
A11 Bionic
The tenth generation model uses the same hardware platform as the iPhone 8 Plus. Inside is a 6-core A11 Bionic processor with 64-bit and a clock speed of 2.39 GHz. It also integrates a Neural Engine chip for machine learning, an M11 motion coprocessor and a 3-core graphics card. According to the results of synthetic tests, the A11 Bionic is among the fastest processors for smartphones. For example, in the Geekbench test, the processor scored 4236 points in single-core mode and 10386 in multi-core.
Games, programs, and other iPhone X features are fast. The amount of RAM is 3 GB, but this is enough for comfortable everyday use of the smartphone and support for multitasking. Phones Apple have never had a lot of RAM, as the company has always emphasized powerful processors. As a result, the 10th generation model received the same amount of RAM as is installed on the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus.
Animoji
The most hilarious new feature for iPhone X is animated emoji (Animoji). This feature is only available for iMessage. With its help, the user can send voice messages and demonstrate their facial expressions through funny animated animals, robots, aliens, etc. For example, if you select an animated fox as your emoji and smile, then another user will see on his smartphone not your face, but grinning beast.
This function was implemented thanks to the TrueDepth system, which captures the movements of 50 facial muscles and transmits them to an animated image. Emoji does not bring practical benefits, since this innovation was created only for fun communication between users.
To create your own Animoji, follow these steps:
- Open the Messages app. Create new text or select an existing one.
- Click on the icon with the letter 'A', then on the image of the monkey.
- Select emoji on the left side of the screen.
- Look at the smartphone so that the face is in the frame.
- Click on the red dot icon to start recording. The limit for each emoji is 10 seconds.
- Click the blue arrow icon to send your message.
Camera
TrueDepth
There are TrueDepth cameras on a ledge on top of the display:
- infrared lens;
- infrared emitter;
- 7 megapixel camera;
- dot projector.
These elements are required to create a detailed structural map of the user's face and activate the Face ID biometric recognition system. The camera projects about 30 thousand invisible points, and the infrared module reads them, creating a face map. The sensor allows this procedure to be carried out in complete darkness. The collected information is sent to the Secure Enclave module, which belongs to the A11 Bionic processor.
4K and Slo-Mo in Full HD
4K video recording was first introduced on the device Apple iPhone 6s. Other smartphones of that time also supported this resolution, but only iPhone allowed you to create videos with image stabilization that are unlimited in time. The tenth generation model can record smooth video at 60 FPS.
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone can produce slower video (Slo-Mo) than iPhone X. But the phone Apple is the leader in resolution Full HD because the recording speed is 240 FPS.
Portrait Lighting and True Tone

When creating portraits, the smartphone brightens or darkens individual areas in the frame. This is an imitation of various types of lighting (stage, backlight, etc.).
The True Tone Quad-LED flash has already been used in the iPhone 7, but now it has been extended with Slow Sync for shooting in twilight and dark. The function allows you to highlight objects and work out the background. The slow shutter speed is processed by the camera shutter, after which the flash sends out a short light pulse.
Screen
Device iPhone X is the first smartphone Apple to have a display OLED. Its diagonal is 5.8 ”, resolution – 2436×1125, pixel density – 458 PPI, aspect ratio – 19.5: 9. The screen was named Super Retina HD. The contrast value is 1,000,000: 1 and the brightness is 625 cd / m². The display can recognize pressure (3D Touch function).
The screen looks colorful. True color reproduction was achieved thanks to the factory calibration. The display shows an extended color gamut. White balance is adjusted using a 10-channel light sensor, which adjusts the color temperature to the environment and reduces eye strain.
Unlike the eighth generation smartphone, iPhone X supports Dolby Vision HDR technology. Some videos on YouTube will be played back with increased brightness to enhance contrasting scenes visually.
Like other smartphones with a matrix OLED, the display uses the PenTile pixel pattern. Each section of the screen has red, blue and green subpixels. If a lower resolution was used, the display would look grainy. It is impossible to see individual pixels with the naked eye, since the density is 458 PPI.
The display looks tall and narrow as the aspect ratio is 19.5: 9. For this reason, the interface elements on the 5.8 “screen look smaller than on the 5.5” screen that is installed on iPhone 8 Plus. Not all applications iOS are adapted for this aspect ratio, and videos can be played with cropped edges. The second problem is partially solved by stretching the video to full screen.
New building
The display, surrounded by thin bezels, occupies almost the entire front panel of the case. At the corners, the screen is rounded. There is a large ledge at the top of the display that houses the TrueDepth cameras. Because of this protrusion, the smartphone has been repeatedly criticized, but in practice, the camera module does not interfere with the interface control.
The lenses on the back of the smartphone are arranged vertically. The camera module protrudes from the body and has sharp edges. This creates an additional inconvenience for users who carry the smartphone in their pocket, as it can cling to fabric. The rest of the back panel does not differ from the phones iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
The main material for the body is glass with rounded edges. Glass protects the front and back panels. The edges of the smartphone are crafted from polished surgical steel.
Despite the presence of an oleophobic coating, handprints remain on the case. There is no film under the glass that prevents damage to the case in case of impact. Even after falling from a small height iPhone, X can suffer structural damage, which has earned it a reputation as the most fragile smartphone Apple.
On the left side of the case there is a lever for activating the silent mode and a volume rocker. On the right side there is a power button and a slot for installing a SIM card.
The dimensions of the device are 143.5×70.9×7.7 mm, weight – 174 g. This smartphone is larger than iPhone 8, but inferior in size to the 8 Plus model. Available in 2 colors: dark gray and silver. The front panel will always be black, since you can only choose the color of the back cover.
The housing is protected against environmental influences in accordance with the IP67 standard. The phone can withstand immersion in water to a depth of 1 m. At the same time, the smartphone cannot be replaced under warranty if it breaks down due to water penetration.
Fast charging
Fast charging technology is supported on devices iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. The battery is charged to 50% in 30 minutes using the Apple USB-C / Lightning cable and power adapter with power of 29, 61 or 87 watts. Alternatively, you can use a comparable USB-C adapter from another manufacturer if it supports the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) standard. The adapter capacity Apple is always indicated on the underside of the adapter.
Fast wireless charging is based on the maximum allowable voltage at amperage, allowing you to spend less time on the whole process. After reaching the 50% mark, the battery fills up more slowly, because a special controller detects a rise in temperature and reduces the current, preventing damage to the batteries. When the battery is 80% full, the voltage is reduced to a minimum value, thereby extending the battery life.
